It's beautifully written, historically interesting, politically inspiring, and emotionally poignant. Today, in a post-Communist world, it's often forgotten that for 70 years it was the Communist Parties who fought for Jews, Kurds, women, and the poor when other organisations were notable by their absence. The depressing failure of the Communists when themselves in power does not gainsay that. Fawzi's family were on the edge of being wiped out several times, what with brutal police, corrupt officials, British imperialists, cynical Zionists and a string of brutal Iraqi regimes (except for that of Abd al-Karim Qasim) but the Communists persisted with unbelievable courage. Yet the focus of the novel is not just on politics, but on a human struggle to survive from day to day, not just physically but emotionally, and in particular on the doggedness of the mother, Um-Kamal, who holds the family together through imprisonments, savage beatings, betrayals and despair. A good read, and highly recommended.
